Karen Dietz, Chair
Paula Bartholome, Vice
Chair
(You will notice there is no Secretary/Treasurer! Recently
Dorothy Cleveland who was serving ably in that role had to resign. We are
glad to report, however she is still an active member of NSN and the SIG
and we wish her well. That said, who among you would like to fill out
Dorothy's term? If you are interested, please contact Karen Dietz [email protected]
to discuss the specific responsibilities of the position. If we do say so
ourselves, we are easy to work with, committed to quality and focused on
having a good time too!)

Pre-Conference Workshop for 2004 a Winner! |
 |
Thanks to our 2004 Pre-Conference Chair,
Mary-Alice Arthur from New Zealand and her committee members, our
program for Bellingham, Washington promises to be a winner!
The program will explore business applications of this
year's overall theme Embracing the Power of Storytelling. The
use of narrative, storytelling and storywork in an organizational
setting is a new and developing field. We are bringing together
thought leaders and trendsetters, as well as offering a framework
for participants to meet, collaborate and share new ideas and
discoveries.
The opening evening, Tuesday, July 5, begins
with Dave Snowden, head of IBM's Cynefin Centre for Complexity, a
groundbreaking research and consulting arm, involved in research and
implementation of narrative strategies internationally. Dave is a
highly articulate and provocative speaker and participants will be
able to experience both cutting edge theory and practical business
applications. This session offers a great way to introduce
colleagues from your organization to the use of story in support of
knowledge management.
Wednesday is filled with a highly
interactive series of sessions including world café style full-group
programs, keynote speakers, a panel on storytelling and technology
and a series of practically-focused workshops. One confirmed
presenter is Richard Stone of the StoryWork Institute who has been
doing story work in organizations for longer than most. He has
wonderful stories and techniques to share along with his book. The
entire day has been designed to offer participants an overview of
the field, practical tools and the opportunity to create or expand
your network of supportive and stimulating colleagues.
Watch
for more information about the pre-conference and start to think
about who you want to invite to join you there!

Goals for SIO SIG |
 |
~ Grow membership - with 91 members, the SIO
SIG is currently the fastest growing SIG within NSN and the second
largest! Who do you know who would be interested in joining? ~
Have materials developed for use in marketing the SIG - this
tri-fold brochure will be available to members to use when they
attend programs or meet others who would benefit from joining us.
Watch for the announcement on its availability. ~ Maintain SIG's
financial health ~ Increase attendance at the July
pre-conference workshop and receive positive feedback on program
content and value. See the article below for information on how the
program is shaping up. ~ Develop educational programs where
members can easily share tips and techniques on using storytelling
successfully to accomplish various organizational goals. Watch for
more on this after the first of the year! ~ Build connections
between members to strengthen the SIG and foster a sense of
community within the organization. The first effort was the member
survey conducted by phone during November.
These are the things we've been talking about. But this is your
SIG and we want to shape it in ways that make it most useful and
meaningful to you. The results of the survey will be in the next
newsletter.

Bits and Pieces |
 |
* Opportunities for involvement... There
are several ways to get involved and get to know the other great
members of the SIG. ~ Keep the communication going. We're
looking for someone to keep the SIONews coming to you on a regular
basis. If you are interested, please contact [email protected]
~ Help in Bellingham. If you are willing to help out "on the
ground" at the pre-conference program, please contact the
Pre-Conference Chair, Mary-Alice Arthur at [email protected].
~ Get active on the list serve. There's a wealth of knowledge
out there that's just waiting to be shared. Ask a question. Answer a
question. To post to the list address your email to: [email protected].
To be added to the list or with any list related questions, contact
Kathy Flanagan at [email protected]. ~ If
you are doing work in an organization using storytelling or know
someone who is, send information to [email protected]
for coverage in a future newsletter.
* ANNOUNCING: Storytelling, Self, Society: An
Interdisciplinary Conference and Journal of Storytelling
Studies... The South Florida Storytelling Project at Florida
Atlantic University invites participation in an interdisciplinary
academic conference that will both present current scholarship on
storytelling and launch the discipline's first peer-reviewed
academic journal. Like the journal, the conference is presented in
conjunction with the National Storytelling Network and its affiliate
special interest groups, including Storytelling in Organizations,
Storytelling in Higher Education, and the Healing Story Alliance. As
a member of the SIO SIG you will receive a copy of the first issue
of the journal at our conference in Bellingham. (If you are unable
to attend the conference, it will be mailed to you.)
The
Storytelling, Self and Society Conference will feature papers,
panels and workshops on themes related to storytelling as private or
public discourse and will showcase storytelling performances. The
proceedings will comprise the journal's first issue and represent
disciplines including storytelling, communication, English,
education, library science, nursing, medicine, business, peace
studies, psychology, theatre and performance studies.
John S. Gentile, Ph.D.,
Chair Theatre and Performance Studies Kennesaw State
University [email protected]
Indicate
audio-visual or other special needs. Deadline for submissions:
Monday, December 22, 2003. For more information on the conference,
please contact [email protected]
* Upcoming Lunch 'n Learn programs... as mentioned above
we are planning to do some educational programs for members and are
considering the teleclass format. This would be a one-hour telephone
call with a specific subject for each call and presenters who
provide their insights and answer participant questions. Please let
us know if you would be willing to participate as a presenter and
your proposed topic. If you want to hear about a specific topic,
please let us know that as well. Contact [email protected]
or [email protected]
with your ideas!
* Be a Conversation Catalyst - Are you deeply curious
about story applications in organizations and want to find out more
about what other members are up to? Do you like to ask probing
questions? If so, you are the person we need to help stimulate
conversation on the SIO SIG listserv [email protected].
Our members-only listserv is not "moderated"-- so whatever is posted
is distributed, no muss, no fuss, no editing. But sometimes we need
a catalyst to keep the conversation going by asking a question or
cheering on the chatters. Many members enjoy watching from the
sidelines and just need a bit of prodding to join in the discussion.
If you enjoy keeping a conversation going, please contact [email protected]
or [email protected]
to volunteer for this important and fun role.

Committee Chair Comments - Kathy Flanagan -
Listserv |
 |
Do you want a story idea to introduce a
diversity training session? Are you thinking about using narrative
to develop a shared vision for a client team? Want to know what
other members think about an upcoming seminar? If you want quick
answers to any of these questions, participate in the SIO SIG
members-only listserv called [email protected].
Currently the listserv has 90+ members and averages a handful of
messages per week, so it is not unduly burdensome. And you can
choose how to get your messages: by going to the topica.com website
at your convenience, by getting digests of every five messages, or
by getting each individual message.
You must be a member to
be invited to subscribe. Each month, new SIO SIG members are sent
invitations. To subscribe, just reply in the affirmative to the
invitation. If you are a member and have never received an
invitation, please contact [email protected].
Occasionally some Internet service providers or spam
screening services block email messages from listservs. Topica.com
works diligently to remedy this situation and regain "unblocked"
status. In the meantime, you can usually still read messages at the
topica.com website. Also, occasionally subscribers may be dropped
accidentally due to continued blocking by their providers. If you
are dropped by mistake, you will be invited to subscribe again in
the next batch of monthly invitations to new members. If you have
any difficulties with the listserv, please contact me and I'll be
happy to help: [email protected].
